Welcome to LCGC Research Group

We specialize on the investigation of small organic molecules from complex matrices. To accomplish this goal, we study all aspects of sample preparation, chromatography, and mass spectrometry. From time to time, we adventure into the realm of chemometrics.

Research

We develop fundamental research on sample preparation methods, analytical instrumentation, and chemometrics. These solutions are used to solve complex investigations in multidisciplinary studies.

Fundamentals:

  • Sample preparation: static headspace sampling (HS), purge and trap sampling (P&T), thermal desorption (TD), vacuum assisted sorbent sampling, and solid-phase microextraction (SPME).

  • Conventional and multidimensional gas chromatography (heart-cutting and comprehensive).

  • Conventional and column switching liquid chromatography.

  • Mass spectrometry (sequential (MS/MS), high-resolution (HRMS), ambient ionization methods).

  • Chemometric processing of GC, LC, and MS data.

  • Applications using microfluidic devices.

Applications:

  • Petroleum chemistry: sample preparation for the analysis of organic compounds in crude oils. Characterization (untargeted and targeted) of crude oils for flow assurance and organic geochemistry investigations. Investigation of water-oil emulsions and their stability. Isolation and characterization of acidic, basic and interfacially active organic compounds in water-oil emulsions.

  • Water analysis: analysis of water produced in oil exploration.

  • Food processing, food technology, and food analysis.

  • Essential oil production and analysis.

  • Plant metabolomics.
